Twitter: already doomed?

I can’t be arsed looking for the link – it was in the Times (and not that Ruper Murdoch needs linkjuice from me anyway) – but there was a fairly cogent argument over there about why Twitter is ultimately a doomed format. I suspect that the piece was right.

While it offers a novel format to access to the thoughts of various celebs, marketing folk and a few savvy business leaders Twitter is a busted flush. Firstly, the very appearance of celebrities and businesses on there is a death knell to the all-important Underground Cool factor that tech products rely on. Secondly, who isn’t already getting fucked off with self-aggrandising nobodies (such as yours truly!) clogging the thing up, with their 45000 followers and rubbish updates? Thirdly, Twitter ain’t making any money any time soon and it’s hard to see how adding adverts will do anything to maintain its credibility as a format.

My bet? In three years we’ll all be round a plate of nachos saying “God… do you remember Twitter?”
