I said back in September last year that Chrome was basically an OS, and now Google have confirmed as much. Is it coincidence that this announcement comes a fortnight after Microsoft made their most public effort yet to intrude on Google’s turf with the launch of Bing? Not on your nelly.
Funny how things pan out. When I was a nipper, it was suggested that we’d all use ‘Dumb Terminals’ – just a box to talk to a mainframe without any processing power of its own. Commodore 64s made all that seem silly and quaint when you could program your own text adventure by copying 600 lines of basic from Commodore User magazine and before we knew it we had enough computing power to control satellites sat in the corner of the dining room. And then all of a sudden the biggest announcement of the week is that we’re all…. going to be using dumb terminals (if Google gets their way). Plus ca change, eh?
